Tigerair Australia has announced a new route between Brisbane and Canberra.

The airline will also launch additional services between Melbourne and Canberra following a strong positive customer response since Tigerair first launched flights on that route in December 2016.

From 14 September, Tigerair will operate three weekly return services (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays) between Brisbane and Canberra, providing the only low-cost air travel option on this route, delivering opportunities for that weekend away, trip to the snowfields or to catch a world class art exhibition. The new services are scheduled for a mid-morning departure from Brisbane and a lunchtime departure from Canberra.

In further good news for the region, the airline is also adding an additional weekly return service between Melbourne and Canberra on Fridays from 15 September, taking the number of Tigerair return services between Melbourne and Canberra to eight per week.

Tigerair Australia CEO Rob Sharp says the additional low-cost flights announced were in direct response to overwhelming consumer demand:

“Canberrans have truly embraced Tigerair’s great value fares and friendly service. We have had a fantastic customer response to our Melbourne Canberra services since we launched them in December last year.

“With eight weekly return services from Melbourne and three from Brisbane, Tigerair Australia will be providing close to 4,000 seats weekly through Canberra Airport or over 200,000 seats annually to the doorstep of the nation’s capital city.”

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said:

“We look forward to continuing to partner with our valued airport and tourism partners to stimulate air travel on the new route.”

“Tigerair flights between Brisbane and Canberra comes off the back of record domestic visitors to the capital last year – and is a sign of the growing status of Canberra as a tourist destination. I welcome Tigerair’s commitment to the ACT and I look forward to welcoming more visitors from Queensland to the capital.”

Canberra Airport’s Managing Director, Stephen Byron, said Tigerair’s faith in the potential of low-cost flights had been endorsed by the enthusiastic response from Canberrans and travelers from the wider region.

Julieanne Alroe, Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) CEO and Managing Director said:

“Since opening a permanent base at Brisbane Airport just three short years ago, Tigerair has gone from strength to strength.

“With Canberra added to its expanding network, it’s exciting that passengers now have access to Tigerair’s fantastic low fare flights between Brisbane and all state and territory capitals, with the exception of Hobart. Perhaps that’s next on the list, you never know,” Ms. Alroe said.
