TSA and American Airlines install automated security screening lanes at JFK
The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), in collaboration with American Airlines, has deployed two new automated security screening lanes in Terminal 8 at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
The automated screening lanes installed at the American Airlines terminal are equipped with technology that helps improve security effectiveness and reduce screening time for each passenger.
JFK currently has a total of 11 new automated screening lanes spread throughout several terminals at the airport.
American Airlines JFK managing director Mike McKanna said: “We are proud to be working collaboratively with the TSA to debut next generation screening technology in Terminal 8.
“These state-of-the-art lanes enhance security effectiveness and efficiency and will improve the customer experience for our passengers in time for the busy summer travel season.”
They have been designed to improve the screening process of passengers by automating a wide range of functions that were carried out manually earlier.
The screening lanes feature stainless-steel countertops built to allow several passengers to place their items in bins simultaneously.
They are also equipped with automated conveyor belts that draw bins into the X-ray machines and return them to the front of the queue.
Carry-on baggage that may seem to be a potential threat is automatically moved to a separate area, enabling the bins behind to continue through the screening process.
Each bin is integrated with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags that allow for additional accountability of a passenger’s items throughout the security process.
Cameras are installed to capture photographic images of the contents of each bin, which are linked side-by-side to the X-ray image of the contents of a baggage.
