Lion Air 737-800 veers off runway after landing in rain

A Lion Air Boeing 737-800 skidded off the runway and came to a stop in soft ground after landing in rainy conditions at Gorontalo's Jalaluddin airport on 29 April.

The aircraft, registered PK-LOO, was operating a Makassar-Gorontalo service with 174 passengers and seven crew onboard when the incident happened. Evacuation was done through emergency slides, with two passengers sent for medical treatment.

Local media reports say the aircraft had overran the end of the runway before coming to a stop in soft ground. Pictures on social media shows the CFM International CFM56-powered aircraft resting in mud with its gear struts submerged.

The Indonesian carrier says that while it had been raining, the visibility at the Indonesian airport had met landing requirements.

The airport is temporarily closed, and Lion is working to remove the aircraft. Indonesian authorities are also investigating the incident.

Flight Fleets Analzyer shows that the 2014-built aircraft is owned and managed by SMBC Aviation Capital.
