Logistics firm Kuehne + Nagel is to join Budapest Airport’s cargo community on 1 July, having leased warehouse and office space at the Hungarian gateway.

René Droese, director property and cargo at the airport, said: “I look at forwarder companies as our closest strategic partners in developing our cargo route network. Jointly, we can bring the right cargo airlines with the right capacity and flight frequency to Budapest.”

The new North American services that will soon provide belly capacity between Budapest and New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Toronto, for instance, illustrate the city’s growing connectivity.

László Szabó, national air freight manager for Kuehne + Nagel Hungary, referred to these flights as one of the factors in the forwarder’s decision to partner with Budapest Airport, saying: “We believe that keeping our fingers on the pulse of our customers’ business helps us to react rapidly and meet all of their expectations”.

This summer will see the start of construction of a new dedicated freight centre, Cargo City, as part of Budapest Airport’s €160m BUD: 2020 Development Programme. The facility is scheduled for handover in the second quarter of 2019, and will expand the hub’s cargo handling capacity to 250,000 tonnes per year.

Cargo City will handle freighters operated by carriers including Cargolux, Turkish Cargo, and Qatar Airways Cargo, as well as belly cargo from other airlines.
