IndiGo takes 125 more A321neos through order switch

Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo is to take another 125 Airbus A321neos, by converting a batch of its huge A320neo backlog to the larger type.

IndiGo had 405 A320neos on order at the end of the first nine months of this year, analysis of the airframer’s backlog shows.

It also had orders for 25 A321neos, which were themselves the result of two previous conversion arrangements.

But Airbus’s revised figures for October list IndiGo as having a total order of 280 A320neos – a reduction of 125 – while its A321neo commitment has increased by 125, to 150 overall.

IndiGo becomes the latest operator to scale up to the largest version of the re-engined single-aisle family.

The carrier has taken delivery of 56 A320neos but has yet to receive any A321neos. It does not operate the A321.

Airbus has not indicated whether any of the A321neos bound for IndiGo are the longer-range version.

It has secured orders for 2,212 A321neos, over 400 more than the total number of A321s sold since the type was first ordered in 1989.

A321neos account for 35% of all A320neo-family jets on order.
