Hong Kong International Airport reports ۸.۹% rise in May passenger traffic
TIN news: Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) handled 5.1 million passengers in May, which represents an 8.9% increase compared with the same period last year.
The increase in passenger traffic was driven by a year-on-year growth in all passenger categories.
Hong Kong resident, transfer/transit and visitor traffic grew by 10%, 9% and 8% respectively, with passenger traffic to/from Taiwan and mainland China recording the most significant increases.
"In recent years, airlines have been adjusting their fleets and replacing old aircraft with newer and quieter models offering higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions."
Cargo volume increased 8.3% year-over-year to 367,000t, driven mainly by transshipments, which was up 18% from a year ago.
Flight movements in the month rose 5.3% to 32,700 compared with the same month last year.
Hong Kong Airport Authority chief executive officer Stanley Hui Hon-Chung said: "In recent years, airlines have been adjusting their fleets and replacing old aircraft with newer and quieter models offering higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
"We are also seeing airlines introducing larger aircraft to serve busy routes, particularly on the major inter-continental routes. Supporting this trend, we have been enhancing facilities at HKIA.
"As a result, HKIA is now equipped with a total of six frontal parking stands that can accommodate large wide-bodied aircraft."
In the first five months of 2014, the airport witnessed 6.9% increase in passenger traffic, as well as a 6.1% year-on-year growth in cargo and flights.
