TfL starts public consultation for London Underground’s Bakerloo Line extension

TfL starts public consultation for London Underground’s Bakerloo Line extension
|
TIN news:  The UK's Transport for London (TfL) has launched a public consultation that provides detailed proposals for new stations along the proposed extension of London Underground’s Bakerloo Line.
The Bakerloo line extension to Lewisham through Old Kent Road and New Cross Gate helps address the needs of the capital's growing population.
Furthermore, it is expected to support growth in south-east London through improved connectivity, increased transport network capacity and reduced journey times to destinations such as the West End and Lewisham town centre.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “I'm delighted that we're pushing ahead with the Bakerloo line extension two years earlier than originally planned.”
The Bakerloo line extension is set to provide extra capacity on London Underground for 65,000 journeys in the morning and evening peak. It is also expected to reduce CO2 emissions and air pollution from other modes of transport, and make an underground train available every two to three minutes between Lewisham and central London.
"The extension will help improve connectivity for an area under-served by public transport where there is potential to support 25,000 new homes and 5,000 new jobs."
TfL has proposed two stations along Old Kent Road, one at New Cross Gate and one at Lewisham in a bid to increase connectivity and support regeneration.
TfL planning acting managing director Alex Williams said: “The Bakerloo line extension plays an important part in these plans, improving connectivity for an area under-served by public transport where there is potential to support 25,000 new homes and 5,000 new jobs.”
The consultation will run until 21 April this year, and also details proposed locations of the ventilation shafts required to support this extension.
TfL announced in its business plan that the updated proposals will bring the completion date of the extension forward by two years to 2028-29.
