TIN news:     The Korea Railroad Research Institute has introduced a new unmanned mini-tram that can be moved vertically with the help of an elevator.

The Korea Bizwire reported that the first trial run for the mini-tram took place at the institute's head office in Euiwang in the southern outskirts of Seoul last week.

Powered by battery, the tram is said to be capable of travelling at a speed of 50km/h and can accommodate six passengers.
"The institute is expected to speed up construction of the mini-tram, in a bid to commercialise the technology by 2016."

The institute is expected to speed up construction of the mini-tram, in a bid to commercialise the technology by 2016.

According to media reports, the new tram will be deployed in stations where short intervals between trains are required.

This will allow passengers to quickly reach destinations, including large shopping malls, transit transfer centres and airports.

The tram has been designed to pick up passengers from stations with the help of a call-up button and carries them to destinations along the route as indicated by the GPS.

According an official from the research institute, the small size of the tram will allow it to easily transit through small residential towns and can be built with low production costs.

The new tram will be running on magnet platforms placed every two metres along the road rather than the conventional rails.

The battery of the tram can be recharged wirelessly within two minutes during each stop, according to Arirang News.

Trams that are similar to this are already in operation in London's Heathrow Airport and Masdar City Airport in Abu Dhabi.
