Mauritius: State to Be a Leading Port in the Region, Says Deputy Prime Minister Duval
TIN news: The number of cranes will increase from five to seven and the existing quay will be extended by 240 metres which in turn will allow more operations in terms of volumes and numbers and position Mauritius as a leading port in the region. These will be possible in a near future after completion of the extension and strengthening of the Mauritius Container Terminal (MCT) by March 2017.
This statement was made yesterday by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism and External Communications, Mr Xavier Luc Duval, during a site visit at the port to take stock of the progress achieved regarding works being carried out for the development of the port.
Minister Duval highlighted that the works comprise the extension and strengthening of the terminal, bund construction, marine and civil works and dredging works to the tune of Rs 5.8 billion and that these will pave the way for further works such as a phase two for the extension of the container terminal and an island container terminal.
The Minister of External Communications underlined that the core work till March 2017 concern the extension of the existing 560 metres MCT berth by 240 metres and the expansion of the container stacking yard by 7.5 hectares.
Mr Sandesh Seelochun, Manager, Port Development, at the Mauritius Ports Authority, explained that in terms of transhipment volume it is expected that the number will increase from 500 000 TEUs to some 800 000 TEUs after completion of the works. He added that the port will be in a better position to handle a greater volume of cargo and will take less time to do so as the crane movement is expected to increase from 20 to 25 moves per hour.
