Passenger transport group urges young people to join the industry

IRU Passenger Transport Council members met in Geneva today to seek sustainable solutions to driver shortages. 

They provided substantial inputs into IRU’s road map to tackle the issue, in particular for better recruitment and retention. 

Among the issues highlighted were perceptions and the image of the sector, future challenges with changing technology, automation and new business models, and attracting young people and women into transport.

Christiane Leonard from BDO Germany, commented,
“Image is important: young people have the impression that they are no longer needed which is not the case.”

Newly elected President, Jos Sales, from FLEAA, Luxembourg, addressed members, who were briefed on the results of recent meetings in Brussels where driver shortages – and the potential to attract a younger, more diverse demographic – were in the spotlight.  

In a fresh format, a workshop was held in the afternoon, addressing EU decision making, hydrogen fuel and decarbonisation, and national advocacy case studies.
