TIN news:   The two largest tug boats of Greece were deployed by Vernicos Tugs & Salvage in order to tow the container ship MSC Mirella late yesterday evening back to safety. The MSC-owned vessel had lost propulsion power after engine failure occurred about seven nautical miles southwest off the island of Milos in Greece. The vessel was headed from Piraeus to Mersin, when an engine failure left it stranded near rocky shores. As a result, it was soon under monitoring from local authorities, including a rescue boat, while no fears of a sea pollution were detected. Similarly, all 27 crew members are in good health.

Vernicos’ representatives talked with Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide, noting that the container ship was expected back in Piraeus in order to assess the damage. “We dispatched the two largest tug boats of Greece at the scene, in order to provide the best service possible”, a company’s spokesperson said.

The container ship MSC Mirella (IMO: 8709640) has an overall length of 177.60 meters, with a deadweight of 25,904 DWT with a capacity of 2,058 TEU. The container ship was built in 1989 by Uljanik Shipyard in Pula, Croatia.
