DMA invites tenders for analysis of barriers to autonomous ships

TIN news:  The Danish Maritime Authority invites tenders for an analysis of the regulatory barriers to the development of autonomous ships, as it is striving to promote the development of such technologies.

The DMA notes that, in order to make the necessary amendments of rules and regulations nationally as well as internationally, it needs a knowledge base. The purpose of the analysis is to acquire knowledge through an in-depth analysis of the barriers to autonomous ships.

Therefore, everyone with knowledge about Blue Denmark is welcome to tender for the task. The deadline for submitting tenders to udbud@dma.dk is Monday, 29 May 2017 at noon.

Remotely controlled ships, piloted by people on shore, and autonomous ships, which can navigate on their own, are the latest proof of the ongoing digital development and transformation. Many companies have included plans for this technology on their agendas. For instance, Rolls-Royce has mounted a joint industry project in Finland called Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications (AAWA), with hope to create a remotely controlled or autonomous vessel, until the end of the decade.

Furthermore, Yara and Kongsberg recently joined forces in order to build the world’s first fully electric and autonomous container ship, with zero emissions, expected to be capable of performing fully autonomous operations from 2020.
