WSM sets Big Data high on the agenda

Wilhelmsen Ship Management says it is continuously developing its digital solutions. The company commits to digitalization by utilizing Big Data in its operations. Already, the WSM has deployed various digital reporting systems onboard as part of its ship management operations, having a wide data framework.

All vessels managed by WSM are analyzed with a business intelligence tool. This tool extracts information from the data warehouse, consolidates reports and creates analysis for decision making.

Carl Schou, President of Wilhelmsen Ship Management, said: ‘We have moved from traditional management through alerts and reports to digital dashboards. Today, with big data we can perform statistical analysis and develop more dimensions of visualized reporting. It is our aim to fully utilize this tool to assist owners in reducing operating cost, improving vessel performance and achieving their green initiatives.’

There are three main areas for WSM to digitize their operation performance: safety compliance, regulation compliance, maintenance & monitoring. With systems in place, the amount of available data from vessels continue to grow.

“The data contain large amounts of measuring points with a high sampling rate. As the dependencies and variety of systems deployed onboard increased, we saw the need to convert huge volumes of data into information that can be used for both operational and analytical purposes.” Christina Cheh , Vice President, Global HSEQ, WSM stated.

By using this data, WSM can help owners to achieve greener, safer and optimized operations. This digital print serves as foundation blocks for the big data era.

WSM also says that it has plans for increasing their big data utilization in forecasting and scenario planning. Along with Big Data utilization, Internet of Things (IoT) is also high on the agenda and WSM sees it as a very near possibility.
