Bulk carrier runs aground off Greece
A Bahamas-flagged bulk carrier, named “St. Gregory”, ran aground in the morning hours of June 8th, off Peloponnese, Greece. The ship was carrying 19 crew members, none of whom was injured.
According to Hellenic Coast Guard, the 2010-built vessel was carrying sulphur from Ukraine to Tunisia and it was scheduled to reach its destination on June 9, when it grounded in Kokkala Beach.
Greek Coastguard sent two patrol boats to the scene. Divers that inspected the vessel found breaches of 70-80cm at the hull’s fore peak and there were reports of water ingress.
So far, there is no evidence of water pollution and the area is closely monitored for eventual environmental pollution. The causes of the incident are under investigation by local authorities.
