Tokyo Gas to explore onshore LNG terminal feasibility in Bangladesh

Tokyo Gas Co announced that it has got an order to conduct a feasibility engineering study at an onshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal in Bangladesh.

The order was secured through the company’s wholly owned unit Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions Corp, jointly with engineering consultant Nippon Koei Co by state-run Bangladesh Oil, Gas & Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla), according to Reuters.

Under the contract, Tokyo Gas and Nippon Koei will examine the feasibility of building a land-based LNG terminal in Bangladesh, in coastal area sites that Petrobangla has already shortlisted.

Bangladesh demand for gas is expected to increase in the following decades, so the country plans to start importing LNG next year. The terminal is expected to provide more security compared to the FSRU-based terminals, currently under construction, specially in cases of inclement weather conditions.

Bangladesh’s Petrobangla has also signed agreements for two more LNG terminals and a memorandum of understanding with Swiss commodity merchant AOT Energy for help lining up supplies.

Recently, Tokyo Gas also announced plans for a project to supply LNG to remote island nations of Southeast Asia, with the installation of LNG storage units in each island and commissioning of small LNG vessels.
