The world’s first containership to be converted to LNG propulsion has successfully completed its first LNG bunkering in port of Bremerhaven, Germany, according to local media.

The 1,036 TEU Wes Amelie, owned by Wessels Reederei, has undergone an engine conversion, from MAN four stroke engine to a dual-fuel engine, at the German Dry Docks in Bremerhaven, since May 2017.

Hamburg-based Nauticor, owned by Linde Group, realized the bunkering operation at Bremerhaven, with four trucks of LNG brought to the German port and transferred to the vessel.

“Due to the smooth cooperation between the ship’s crew, the bremenports team and our experienced specialists, the initial bunkering was a complete success,” noted Sonja Neßhöver, Director of the LNG Portfolio, Nauticor.

The conversion was supported by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, and may be extended to other ships in the fleet.

Wes Amelie and her 15 sisterships realize feeder routes in the North Sea and Baltic Sea.
