Shell to supply LNG to two Siem car carriers

Shell NA LNG and Shell Western LNG have signed a long term agreement with Siem Car Carriers to supply LNG as marine fuel to two new car carriers.

The newbuildings will transport Volkswagen vehicles from Europe to North America, starting from 2019. The ships are expected to be among the first LNG-powered car carriers at the time and the first such ships deployed on intercontinental trades.

Shell said that it plans to refuel the vessels in Northwest Europe, with its LNG bunker ship ‘Cardissa’, and a second supply point in the US.

As noted, more and more industry players are choosing LNG over conventional marine fuels. Recently, Toyota Motor Corporation urged three major Japanese shipping lines to use LNG-fueled car carriers for transporting its cars, in a bid to support stringent environmental regulations.
