Ecochlor receives DNV GL type approval
Ecochlor announced that it was granted a DNV GL Type Approval for its Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) on behalf of Norway. In addition to serving as Ecochlor’s Independent Laboratory for US Coast Guard (USCG) Type Approval, DNV GL simultaneously evaluated and approved the Ecochlor System under DNV GL rules and the BWM Convention.
Martin Olofsson, DNV GL Business Development Manager for BWMS type approval testing said: “It has been a challenging, although rewarding, process, as Ecochlor was the first system using a chemical injection treatment technology to be evaluated. Also, many of the issues were a new experience for the USCG.”
With its USCG Type Approval certificate, Ecochlor stands alone as the first approved treatment system produced by a US manufacturer; the only approved chemical injection treatment technology; the only system suitable for installation on US flagged tankers with high flow rates; the only approved BWTS that does not require re-treatment or neutralization on discharge; and, a treatment system with almost twice the flow capacity of any other approved USCG Type Approved technology.
Through the DNV GL Type Approval project, DNV GL used this opportunity to fine-tune rules concerning the safe installation of the Ecochlor BWTS on ships, according to Ingrid Sigvaldsen, DNV GL Project Manager.
“The DNV GL sub-laboratory Golden Bear Facility in San Francisco has done both the land-based and shipboard testing and the results have confirmed the biological efficacy of this system. DNV GL used these same test results and documentation to submit and issue a BWTS type approval certificate on behalf of Norway,” she commented.
Ecochlor received the USCG type approval in August, becoming the fifth company to acquire USCG Type Approval for BWMS.
