Shell shuts operation in four Gulf of Mexico oil platforms

Royal Dutch Shell decided to shut down four of its oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico after the fire that broke out at its Enchilada platform, on November 8, Reuters reports.

USCG Sector New Orleans watchstanders received a report at 1:20 a.m. on that day, that Shell Enchilada platform was on fire, approximately 112 nautical miles south of Vermilion Bay, Louisiana.

As a result of the fire, a 54-year-old male suffered from flash burns and a concussion, and a 29-year-old male suffered from a sprained wrist and a concussion.

Shell shut down the platform and all associated production.

In addition to the Enchilada platform, Shell shut the production in 3 more platforms, the Salsa platform, the associated Hess-operated Conger field and the Auger platform, as there was no plan for the operation to be continued normally, Shell stated.

As Reuters reported, Shell is now attempting to create a plan to repair the damages caused by the fire and re-deploy its personnel safely.
