LNG not enough to comply with emissions regulations

Using LNG as a fuel in ocean-going vessels will not be enough for operators, in order to comply with the emissions regulations that are coming into force. Shipping industry needs to find other ways of reducing emissions, JBC Energy said.

IMO agreed to reduce GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050. JBC Energy noted that only the switch to LNG will not be enough. Even if the entire shipping industry switched to LNG, it would still be far from its CO2 reduction targets by 350 million tonnes.

For this reason, the industry has to come up with more ways to cut CO2 emissions, such as efficiency gains, carbon capture and storage, hybrids and batteries, Reuters reported.

The IMO adopted mandatory rules to enhance fuel efficiency, in order to reduce carbon emissions from ships, but a final plan is not expected until 2023.

LNG can reduce emissions significantly, but the final 2023 plan will be the most important, JBC noted.
