Drewry: World Container Index Up 1.4%

The composite index increased 1.4% this week but, 6.5% down as compared with same period of 2018.
The average composite index of the WCI, assessed by Drewry for year-to-date, is US $1,448 per 40ft container, which is $3 lower than the five-year average of $1,452 per 40ft container.
Drewry’s composite World Container Index (WCI) increased 1.4% or $19 to $1372.11 per 40ft container. Freight rates on Shanghai-New York surged 10% or $254 to touch $2709 per 40ft box. Similarly, rates from Shanghai-Los Angeles gained $179 and reached $1649 per feu. However, freight rates on Shanghai-Genoa plummeted by $187 to $1379 for a 40ft container. Also, rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam lost $73 from last week’s rate of $1447 and stood at $1374 per feu. Drewry expects freight rates to remain stable next week.
