Siemens Mobility has been awarded four contracts by HS2, totalling over 560 million GBP in worth.

With the securement of the contracts, Siemens Mobility join Network Rail, Balfour Beatty, AtkinsRéalis in making HS2 a reality.

As agreed within the contracts, Siemens Mobility is now responsible for the following:

  • Command, Control, Signalling and Traffic Management (CCS&TM)  – The company will implement trackside Automatic Train Operation (ATO) over European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2, marking the first time the system has been used for a high-speed rail network thus far, allowing the use of semi-automatic train operations (Grade of Automation 2) for improved energy efficiency, capacity and punctuality.
  • Engineering Management System  – The company will carry out both the delivery and maintenance of their own Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) technology, which allows for real-time control and monitoring of equipment in use on the line. Siemens Mobility is also tasked with providing support for the system for a minimum of 15 years.
  • High Voltage (HV) Power Supply Systems  – The company will partner with Costain Ltd for the total implementation and maintenance of high voltage power supply systems along the HS2 route, with Siemens Mobility responsible for any maintenance services for the system for a minimum of seven years.
  • Operational Telecommunications and Security Systems  – Finally, the company will design and implement all Operational Telecommunications and Security Systems for the route, as well as provide technical support services and maintenance for at least eight years.

The contracts, which are set to begin in 2025, include long-term maintenance agreements, as well as the potential for additional options throughout fulfilment.

Rob Morris, Joint CEO, Siemens Mobility UKI, said:

“HS2 is going to transform rail travel in Britain, and we’re delighted to be playing a key part in delivering it.

“Our work for HS2 will help in sustaining British jobs and skills from our UK based workforce, and in our 2,500 strong supply chain.”

“We’re already committed to investing £100 million in a brand-new digital engineering, manufacturing and research and development centre in Chippenham which will now play a key role in delivering HS2.”

Siemens Mobility previously secured a contract for the delivery of an integrated station information management system framework for HS2, which was awarded to the company in 2024 and has a total worth of 47 million GBP.
