BLS selects Stadler for its largest rolling stock order
TIN news: BLS has selected Stadler for the largest rolling stock order it has placed, a SFr650m contract covering the supply of 58 single-deck electric multiple-units in 2021-26. The order includes 30 EMUs for RegioExpress services and 28 for S-Bahn Bern routes.
The 105 m long six-car 160 km/h Flirt units will replace EW III coaches, RBDe565 and RBDe 566II railcars. They will have two classes of accommodation, power sockets and enhanced mobile phone reception. The RegioExpress trains will also incorporate a catering zone.
BLS said the decision followed an extensive procurement process, undertaken with input from passenger body Pro Bahn. Final bids were submitted by Stadler and Bombardier Transportation. ‘We had two high-ranking offers on the table’, explained BLS CEO Bernard Guillelmon. ‘After a thorough examination of all criteria, Stadler Rail's offer was convincing. It fulfils the criteria best in terms of price, quality, comfort for our passengers and efficient operation.’
The two bidders were formally notified of the selection on May 1. Signing of the contract is subject to a 20-day standstill period, and the finalisation of BLS, cantonal and federal funding.
