TIN news:  AN agreement to carry out technical and economic studies into the extension of Barcelona metro Line 3 and the Trambaix light rail network was signed by Catalonia’s minister of territory and sustainability Mr Josep Rull and the mayor of Esplugues de Llobregat Mrs Pilar Díaz on May 5.

Under the proposals, Line 3 will be extended 2.3km beyond its current southern terminus at Zona Universitària to Sant Joan de Déu-Finestrelles and Esplugues Centre. Subject to funding, construction is expected to begin on the €180m project in 2021. The extension is expected to boost ridership on the Barceolna metro network by around 6.9 million passengers per year.

The agreement also encompasses the construction of a 1km light rail connection between Esplugues de Llobregat and Sant Just Desvern, which will shorten the route of Line T3 by 1.2km and reduce journey times by almost five minutes for passengers travelling from Sant Feliu de Llobregat and Sant Just Desvern to Barcelona city centre. Construction is expected to begin on the €24.6m project after 2020.
