MBTA announces opening of Boston Landing Station

TIN news: Baker-Polito Administration has opened the new $20m Boston Landing Commuter Rail Station to begin rail service to the Allston-Brighton community.

The new station has been constructed on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Framingham / Worcester Line in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston.

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker said: “The opening of Boston Landing Station highlights a successful collaboration between the state, city, and New Balance to expand development and transit opportunities for the Allston-Brighton community.

“Rewarding projects such as this one spur local economic development and community growth as we continue to prioritise investments that make our public transit system more reliable for riders.”

The new station is situated adjacent to the Massachusetts Turnpike on Guest Street, and is the 17th on the MBTA Framingham / Worcester Commuter Rail Line to complete additional infrastructure improvements.

Refurbishment works included the restoration of double-tracking and the replacement of more than 50,000 rail ties, which is expected to reduce heat-related speed restrictions and improve overall performance.

These structural improvements were conducted by the MBTA's private commuter rail operator in collaboration with Keolis Commuter Services.

Construction initial began on the Boston Landing Commuter Rail Station in October 2015 and was financed by New Balance.

The new station will form a part of the 15-acre, 2.15 million square feet Boston Landing Development site, which is currently under development.

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh said: “As Boston continues to grow and thrive, we need transportation that matches our city’s needs.

“Boston Landing is a big step for transportation in our city, and a big day for Allston-Brighton. I'd like to thank the Commonwealth and New Balance for making this public-private partnership possible.”

The station features a high-level, canopied single platform between the eastbound and westbound tracks along with accessible, redundant elevators and a number of ramps.
