Electric-battery train on test
An electric CRH inter-city trainset equipped with an onboard battery for use on non-electrified lines is on test in Inner Mongolia.
Manufacturer CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles says the trainset can run at more than 200 km/h when using overhead power or at speeds up to 160 km/h using battery power.
Using battery power would avoid the need to install conventional electrification equipment in scenic locations, or could provide power when overhead equipment is affected by sandstorms or extremely cold conditions.
The trainset also incorporates a new type of sound insulation, and has passenger wi-fi.
