Siemens has been contracted to deliver 57 Mireo trainsets to Deutsche Bahn's local transport unit DB Regio.

The contract represents the second order for Siemens’ new regional and commuter train platform following the product's launch last year.

The train sets will be built at the Siemens’ Krefeld facility in Germany and are set to operate on the Rhine-Neckar S-Bahn regional suburban rail network.

Siemens high-speed trains, regional trains and locomotives business CEO Sabrina Soussan said: “We’re especially pleased by the trust DB Regio is placing in us with this follow-up order.

"This marks a further important milestone for the latest generation of our regional train, the Mireo.

“The Mireo combines a high level of performance, comfortable passenger experience and optimal flexibility over the train’s entire lifecycle.”

"The train sets will be built at the Siemens’ Krefeld facility in Germany and are set to operate on the Rhine-Neckar S-Bahn regional suburban rail network."

Mireo locomotives have been purchased by the Ministry for Transportation in Baden-Württemberg, the ZSPNV RLP Süd and the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar to date.

A state company will assume ownership of the trainsets upon delivery and DB Regio will lease them back for the duration of the 14-year operating contract.

The Mireo trains will run as an S-Bahn on the S5, S6, S8 and S9 future lines in the Rhine-Neckar region, and will serve as the ‘Murgtäler Radexpress’ on the route between the cities of Mannheim and Baiersbronn.

Services on routes in Baden-Württemberg and southern Hesse are scheduled to begin in December 2020, while Mireo operations on the route between Mannheim and Mainz in the state of Rhineland Palatinate are expected to begin in December 2021.
