Amtrak begins Amfleet I refurbishment programme
Amtrak has announced the start of work to refurbish its Amfleet I hauled coaches, which are widely used on its Northeast Corridor and Midwest inter-city services.
The $16m refurbishment and overhaul programme covers more than 450 vehicles, with completion planned for mid-2018. A phased approach is being adopted to ensure ‘uninterrupted service for customers’, the operator says.
The refurbishment will include the provision of:
- new seat cushions, carpets and toilet flooring;
- LED reading lights;
- enhanced wainscoting and bulkhead design;
- new curtains in Business Class;
- redesigned galleys in the buffet cars.
Materials included in the refresh have been sourced from ‘approximately a dozen’ domestic suppliers in 10 states, Amtrak reports. The refurbishment work will be carried out at eight depots across the northeastern USA.
