Grant to support interoperable signalling development
The Strategic Council for Research, Experimental Development & Innovation has awarded Lithuanian Railways a grant of €2·3m to support the development of a natural gas-fuelled locomotive as well as €2m for the development of signalling equipment which would be compatible with both EU-specified ERTMS and legacy or neighbouring systems in the 1520 mm gauge region.
The donor loco for the LNG project has now been stripped down for an overhaul of its main components and the installation of a new engine.
The development of the onboard signalling equipment is intended to facilitate through running between routes equipped with ERTMS and other systems.
