BANGLADESH Railways (BR) has awarded a Taka 2976m ($US 35m) contract to Hyundai Rotem for the supply of 10 metre-gauge diesel-electric locomotives funded by the Asian Development Bank.
Hyundai Rotem, which won the contract in competition with Chinese and Spanish suppliers, will start delivery of the locomotives in mid-2020. The 100km/h units will be used to haul passenger and freight trains on the Dhaka - Chittagong main line.
“Most of the railway engines are outdated,” says Bangladesh’s railway minister Mr Mujibul Huq. “More engines will be obtained in the near future to strengthen our locomotive fleet. Procuring 60 engines is under process. Besides, 70 more engines will be supplied by Hyundai Rotem.”
