BOMBARDIER has presented its new Traxx DC3 locomotive to leading Italian operators at its Vado Ligure plant in northwest Italy.

The supplier says the 3kV dc unit is designed to maximise energy efficiency, which ensures greater load, traction capacity and lower energy consumption. It also features a Last Mile function enabling the locomotive to operate on non-electrified track sections at ports or freight terminals.

Traxx DC3 is set up to utilise digital maintenance solutions and can benefit from condition-based maintenance, Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data correlation platforms, which help to monitor the locomotive’s health in real-time and can predict maintenance intervals and interventions.

Italian operators Mercitalia Rail, Captrain Italy, GTS, and Locoitalia, have all ordered the locomotive and were present during the event. Bombardier is currently working on orders for 54 Traxx DC locomotives at Vado Ligure having already built 190 units.
