DAILY services were introduced on the Haramain high-speed line between Mecca and Medina on May 6 to provide additional capacity during the month of Ramadan.

The line is now served by a total of 56 trips a week, including late night and early morning departures.

Services on the 449km line have been incrementally increased since the start of commercial operations in October 2018 under a plan authorised by the Saudi Railways Organisation (SRO) and the Saudi Public Transport Authority. Services will be stepped up to 100 trains a week later this year and 200 trains a week in 2020.

May 4 saw the operation of the 1000th commercial service on the line, which has now carried more than 410,000 passengers with an average load factor of 83%.

The fleet of Talgo high-speed trains has covered more 600,000km since the line opened.
