At InnoTrans 2024, Stadler will display Berlin’s new underground rail cars, manufactured for Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG).

Stadler has developed two vehicle types for Berlin’s underground system:

  • The JK series with a car width of 2.40 metres for the lines with a small profile

  • The J series with a car width of 2.65 metres for the newer lines with a large profile

These rail cars can be operated with different train lengths and configurations to suit the operational demands.

The JK series consists of two- or four-car vehicles that can be combined to form six- or eight-car trains. The J series consists of end and centre cars that can be coupled to form two-, four- and six-car vehicles.

The new underground trains have large, barrier-free entrances to facilitate quick passenger boarding and disembarking. They also feature spacious passageways and multi-purpose areas designed for passengers with reduced mobility.

Thir bright and open interiors aim to create a sense of safety, while a modern real-time passenger information system ensures timely travel updates.

Under a framework agreement between BVG and Stadler, up to 1,500 vehicles will be delivered, marking the largest vehicle procurement in BVG’s history. Of these, 376 cars have already been ordered.

Alongside manufacturing, Stadler will supply spare parts for the next 32 years.

At InnoTrans, Stadler will present a two-part JK car set with a length of 25.5 metres. This vehicle is fully accessible and has 28 seats and 114 standing places. It has a drive power of 540 kW and a top speed of 70 km/h.

This model will be one of eight vehicles on display by the manufacturer at InnoTrans, alongside a range of signalling and service solutions.
