Alstom has been awarded a new contract by the Southern California Regional Rail Authority (Metrolink) to provide operations, servicing, and maintenance for the region’s rail system.

The agreement, valued at 515 million USD for an initial five-year term, will run from January 2025 to June 2030. It includes an option to extend for an additional three years, potentially increasing the contract value to 860 million USD.

Having provided maintenance services for Metrolink’s fleet since 1998, Alstom’s role will now extend to full operations, including train crewing, customer service, rolling stock maintenance, and facilities management.

The company plans to retain 180 existing employees and hire 200 more to support these expanded responsibilities.

Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas said:

“We are grateful for the trust the Southern California Regional Rail Authority and their Board of Directors has placed in Alstom as we expand our role to support their operations and maintenance needs. Metrolink customers are doing their part to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, and we are committed to bringing them our experience and dedication to deliver world class service and to help Metrolink prepare to accommodate visitors from around the world during the upcoming global sporting events in Southern California.”

The Metrolink network spans 545 miles across six counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, and San Diego. It serves 67 stations and operates a fleet of 258 passenger cars and 60 locomotives, providing vital connections for residents and businesses in the region.

In 2025, the network will introduce North America’s first hydrogen-powered train, part of the Arrow service in San Bernardino County. While Alstom will manage operations for the Arrow service, maintenance for its Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) and Zero Emission Multiple Units (ZEMUs) will remain outside the contract’s scope.
