Alstom has released its first socio-economic impact report in Canada, developed in partnership with EY.

The report details Alstom’s significant contributions to the Canadian economy and communities during the fiscal year 2023/24.

According to the report, Alstom’s activities added approximately 575 million CAD to Canada’s GDP. The company worked with 920 local suppliers, spending 448 million CAD on goods and services.

This activity supports a network of 8,300 jobs, including 5,000 direct employees and 3,300 indirect and induced positions.

Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas, said:

“Alstom has been anchored in Canada for decades and is today the only railway company manufacturing trains in the country. Since 2021, our team has grown to 5,000 talented employees who are dedicated to serving our customers across the country, with state-of-the-art railway systems, trains, and world-class operation and maintenance services.”

As Canada’s sole national train manufacturer, Alstom operates production and engineering facilities in Brampton, Thunder Bay, Kingston, La Pocatière, and St-Bruno-de-Montarville. The company has produced nearly 80% of the passenger rail cars in service across the country and maintains a presence in major urban centres through long-term service contracts.

Alstom also plays a key role in advancing Canada’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. In 2022, the company established the Green Innovation Centre in Greater Montreal. A milestone project from the centre was the launch of a hydrogen-powered passenger train in Quebec’s Charlevoix region during summer 2023, marking the first zero-emission passenger train in the Americas powered by green hydrogen.

In addition, Alstom strives to foster an inclusive workplace, earning certification as a “Top Employer in Canada” since 2022. The company offers specialised programmes to support leadership development, particularly for women, and provides over 100 internships annually.

Alstom’s CSR efforts have made a tangible impact, with 697,000 CAD contributed to communities and charitable organisations over the past three years, positively affecting 40,000 individuals. In 2023, Alstom Canada became the first entity in the Americas to earn the AFNOR Confirmed Corporate Social Responsibility Commitment label.
