The project will include the design and construction of new passenger tunnels, which will connect the existing platforms and overbridge to a new station box. The upgrade aims to address increasing passenger demand and improve accessibility at the station.

As lead designer, AECOM will manage engineering services for all tunnelling works associated with the station box. The company will also provide environmental and stakeholder engagement services.

Architectural services and tunnelling expertise will be provided by WW+P and Dr Sauer, respectively, as part of the AECOM-led team.

The station upgrade responds to TfL’s projection that footfall at Elephant & Castle station will increase by 25–40% by 2041. A key feature of the project is the introduction of step-free access to the Northern line, which will enhance accessibility and support the wider connectivity of the station.

Steve Woodrow, Global Practice Tunnelling Lead at AECOM, said:

“The upgrade to Elephant & Castle station will provide necessary futureproofing for the years ahead, helping it to meet growing passenger demand, improve services and provide greater connectivity for the local area. Similarly, providing step-free access to the Northern line will greatly boost accessibility and safety at the station, which was an important goal during the bidding process.”

AECOM has extensive experience delivering tunnelling projects in London, including work on the Thames Tideway Tunnel, the National Grid’s London Power Tunnels, and TfL’s Elizabeth line.

Excavation for the 135 metres of new passenger tunnels at Elephant & Castle is scheduled to begin in 2025, with completion expected in 2027.
