Hitachi, Ltd has successfully delivered a complete electrical and mechanical system for Ho Chi Minh City’s first urban railway, Line 1, which opened on 22 December 2024.

Line 1 is the first urban railway project in Ho Chi Minh City, spanning 19.7 kilometres. It connects Ben Thanh Station in the city centre with Suoi Tien Terminal Station in the northeast, which also serves as a major bus terminal for connections to northern provinces.

The line includes 3 underground stations located in central Ho Chi Minh City and 11 elevated stations spanning the city’s northeast corridor.

The project was financed through a yen loan provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

For its contribution Hitachi provided a comprehensive suite of systems and infrastructure, delivering a turnkey solution. Key elements include:

  • Rolling Stock: 17 train sets comprising 51 cars.
  • Signalling System: A Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system for efficient and safe operations.
  • Telecommunication System: Including a wireless train radio system.
  • Power Supply System: To ensure reliable energy for operations.
  • Platform Screen Doors: Enhancing passenger safety at stations.
  • Automatic Fare Collection System: Supporting seamless ticketing and passenger flow.
  • Overhead Wire and Track Construction: Ensuring robust infrastructure.
  • Rail Yard Facilities: Supporting maintenance and operations.

Vietnam’s rapid economic growth has resulted in increased road traffic volumes, leading to congestion and environmental concerns. By delivering an efficient and modern urban railway, Hitachi aims to support sustainable urban development in Ho Chi Minh City.
