ABB and Stadler are collaborating to enhance sustainable rail transport in the United States.
Through this initiative, ABB will supply traction converters and Pro Series Traction Batteries for Metra’s and Caltrans’ new trainsets in Illinois and California. This will contribute to the development of environmentally friendly rail systems.
Metra is set to become one of the first rail operators in the United States to operate fully battery-powered trainsets. In June 2024, Metra ordered eight two-car trainsets for operations in Chicago. These trainsets will be equipped with Pro 8C batteries and CC750 DC traction converters.
ABB’s traction converters are designed for efficiency and reliability, supporting the performance of the trainsets, while the battery system aims to help Metra reduce CO2 emissions.
Meanwhile, Caltrans has entered into a contract with Stadler US for hydrogen passenger trains, representing a step towards alternative fuel rail solutions in North America. This fleet will consist of 10 trainsets, with ABB providing Pro 8C traction batteries, CC750 DC traction converters, and CC400 DC traction converters.
The traction converters play a key role in integrating fuel cell technology into the trainsets, ensuring efficient propulsion and reduced energy consumption.
Edgar Keller, President of ABB’s Traction division said:
Our collaboration with Stadler is a testament to our commitment to sustainable transportation solutions. By leveraging our advanced technology and local manufacturing capabilities, we are helping drive the transition to cleaner rail transport.
The final assembly and testing of the components for these trainsets will take place at ABB’s Traction factory in Mechanicsville, Virginia, where nearly 100 production workers are employed.
Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler’s Division North America said:
By integrating ABB's traction batteries and converters into our trainsets, we are not only enhancing the efficiency and reliability of our fleets but also contributing to a state-of-the-art transit future, This partnership underscores our commitment to delivering cutting-edge solutions that will benefit communities across the country.
Since 2010, ABB has invested over 14 billion USD in US plant expansions, operational enhancements, modern equipment, and workforce development.
