The roll-out across the whole of TVCA will bring adaptive control technology to the northern English towns of Middlesbrough, Darlington, Stockton-on-Tees, Hartlepool and Redcar as well as the area of Cleveland.
Fusion enables all modes of transport to be modelled and optimised. The system is also easy to operate and reconfigure, enabling traffic managers to effectively manage and balance the often-competing demands of cars, large trucks, buses, taxis, pedestrians and cyclists.
Fusion continuously monitors traffic and develops accurate indicators of congestion and traffic disruption, ensuring traffic management decisions and target outcomes for all road users are policy-driven. Traffic signal timings can be optimised more efficiently to ensure active travel modes and cleaner air outcomes are prioritised.
The Fusion deployment is part of the authority’s Digital Transport Strategy to improve network efficiency and deliver a wide range of traffic management benefits across the region. These include automated incident detection and alerts and improved bus service reliability as well as reduced delays, congestion and emissions.
The rollout of Fusion builds on the authority’s investment in digital twin technology earlier this year with Yunex Traffic and Aimsun for a bus prioritisation solution, noted Andrea Reacroft, digital transport programme delivery manager at TVCA. "Fusion will see benefits across Tees Valley as seen from Transport for London as an early adopter of the solution. Our aim is to improve journey times for all modes of transport, reducing congestion and improving air quality," she said.
"TVCA has chosen the system due to its ability to enhance network performance without the disruption caused by extensive infrastructure schemes,” said Wilke Reints, managing director of Yunex Traffic in the UK.
"By leveraging its advanced adaptive control technology, the authority will be able to optimise traffic flow and enhance the local environment, making walking and cycling easier and safer, all in line with its active travel policies.”
