Boosting Iran’s Role in Regional Transit Corridors
A key focus of the visit was cementing Iran’s position in international transport networks. Azerbaijan, a critical node in the Eurasian trade routes and the INSTC, plays a pivotal role in facilitating transit between Iran, Russia and Europe. Agreements on projects such as the Aghband-Kalalah border bridge and the development of border infrastructure will streamline the cargo flow, positioning Iran as a vital transit hub.
The Aghband-Kalalah Bridge, set to become operational by February 2026, is expected to diversify Iran's transit routes, reducing dependency on traditional pathways and boosting transit revenue. With the completion of integrated road and rail infrastructure, Iran can secure a larger share of regional and global trade, solidifying its status as a logistical powerhouse.

Enhancing Border Infrastructure and Civil Projects
The development of civil projects and highway networks leading to border crossings emerged as a priority in bilateral discussions. Given Azerbaijan’s strategic role in regional transit, investments in border highways, rail systems and terminals capacities are anticipated to increase the speed and efficiency of goods transportation.
Improved infrastructure, including upgraded freeways to border areas, will not only reduce logistics costs but also stimulate economic activity in border regions. This collaboration could generate employment, foster regional development and bolster Iran’s integration into the supply chains of neighboring countries.

Expanding Economic and Trade Cooperation
The visit also laid the groundwork for advancing economic and trade relations. Initiatives such as establishing a joint transport committee and signing customs agreements aim to streamline trade processes and facilitate exports and imports.
Digitalizing customs systems and integrating transit processes will shorten transit times and reduce costs, enhancing Iran’s competitiveness. Furthermore, creating joint free zones and logistics centers in border areas can attract investments, promote joint production and open new business opportunities for Iranian and Azerbaijani enterprises.

Strategic Energy Collaboration
Energy cooperation, particularly in oil and gas, was another cornerstone of the visit. Azerbaijan, a major gas exporter to Europe, is a potential strategic partner for Iran in managing regional energy markets.
Collaborative ventures, such as gas swaps between Iran, Azerbaijan and other regional countries, could expand Iran’s indirect gas export capacity. Joint investments in energy transmission infrastructure and power plants could further bolster regional energy security while advancing mutual economic interests.

Diplomatic and Geopolitical Significance
The high-level meetings between Minister Sadegh and Azerbaijani counterparts, including H.M. President Ilham Aliyev, underscored the shared commitment to deepening bilateral relations. Against the backdrop of intensified geopolitical competition in the South Caucasus, this visit highlights Iran’s strategic use of economic diplomacy to enhance its regional standing.
Greater collaboration with Azerbaijan in multilateral frameworks like the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) can amplify Iran’s influence in the region. Moreover, trilateral coopera
