Canada and Quebec to improve road infrastructure in Saint-Georges
The governments of Canada and Quebec are each investing C$7.3m ($5.7m) to reconstruct Promenade Redmond and build a new retaining wall in downtown Saint-Georges.
Financial assistance to the project comes from New Building Canada Fund, Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure component, the Small Communities Fund.
The City of Saint-Georges authority will also provide C$7.3m ($5.7m) for this project, taking the total governmental and municipal investment to nearly C$22m ($17.4m).
Saint-Georges Mayor Claude Morin said: "Given the reports, we received from professionals regarding the stability of the retaining wall, we are pleased and relieved that this project is being realised thanks to the collaboration of the governments of Canada and Quebec."
The project will see replacement of retaining wall, known as Quai Pinon, to protect downtown Saint Georges against flooding. Improvement works on the Promenade Redmond are expected to ease traffic and make the area more accessible and safer for visitors, cyclists, and pedestrians.
Parliamentary secretary to the minister of health Joël Lightbound said: “We are making investments to support the growth of the middle class and create solid a foundation for a sustainable economic future. Renewing public infrastructure is key to creating strong communities.
"I am pleased to announce this financial assistance that will enable Saint-Georges to make these important infrastructure upgrades."
