Skanska to upgrade Nordby and Smiehagen tunnels in Norway

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has awarded a Nkr385m ($48.1m) contract to Skanska for renovating the Nordby and Smiehagen tunnels on the E6 route in Akershus, Norway. 

Opened in 1993, the Nordby tunnel is 3,850m long, featuring two files in each direction in double pipes. The 892m long Smiehagen tunnel was opened in 1999 and has two lanes heading in one direction. 

Fire safety and rock support will be improved in the Nordby tunnel, while road surface will be replaced and drainage systems repaired in the Smiehagen tunnel. 

"Construction work at these two tunnels is expected to begin next month and is due for completion by February 2019."

A new purification plant will also be built to take water from both tunnels.

The contract value will be included in the Nordic order bookings for the third quarter of this year. 

Skanska has been involved in construction and civil engineering projects in Sweden, Norway, and Finland.
