Canadian environmental intelligence provider Campbell Scientific Canada has secured a contract to maintain 152 road weather information, camera, and digital messaging systems in Alberta, Canada.

The multi-year maintenance project is an important part of a road weather information system (RWIS) contract between Amec Foster Wheeler and Alberta Transportation.

Alberta’s RWIS network collects and analyses real-time road and weather data and prepares reports on current conditions and forecasts.

This report is used by road maintenance personnel to plan their maintenance efficiently and prepare for winter storm events.

The network also provides real-time information and images to the public, allowing drivers to plan their trips accordingly.

"We understand what Albertans deal with and we look forward to playing a role in the safety of Alberta’s roads for the foreseeable future.”

Campbell will maintain some of the key stations in the province to improve public safety on highways, enhance roadway maintenance efficiency, and reduce environmental impact.

As per the terms of the contract, Campbell Scientific Canada will maintain a network of 112 road weather information system stations, ten mobile road weather information system stations, 17 digital messaging signs, three road condition warning system stations, and ten road camera stations.

Campbell Scientific Canada president and CEO Brian Day said: “Our goal as a company has always been to provide the best measurement possible and we’re extremely excited to apply that principle in our own backyard.

“We live and breathe the weather in this province every day, so we understand what Albertans deal with and we look forward to playing a role in the safety of Alberta’s roads for the foreseeable future.”

The contract also includes a chance of adding 20 new stations over the next five years, which will be decided by the Alberta Transportation.

These future stations will be installed on Calgary’s Stoney Trail and Edmonton’s Anthony Henday Drive and include approximately 11 road weather information system stations and nearly nine road camera stations.
