Australian construction company Bama Civil has secured a contract from the Queensland Government to carry out works on a 1.65km stretch of the Peninsula Developmental Road at Ten Mile Creek.

Works will be carried out under the $260.5m Cape York Region Package funded by the Australian and Queensland governments. It has been designed to upgrade key infrastructure on the Cape York Peninsula.

Australian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said: “The Cape York Region Package will give remote communities more reliable access during the wet season and safer, quicker trips during the dry season, which means improved freight and tourism access for local communities, as well as lower ongoing road maintenance costs.

"It will also open up the region to more employment, training and business development opportunities."

For the Cape York Region Package, the Australian Government will offer A$208.4m ($161m), while the Queensland Government will provide A$52.1m ($40.6m).

The Cape York Region Package includes A$200m ($155m) works programme to progressively seal sections of the Peninsula Developmental Road from Laura North to Weipa.

Queensland Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey said: "The package also includes A$10m ($7.76m) over four years for sealing works on the Endeavour Valley Road through to Hope Vale and A$50.5m ($39.2m) for priority community infrastructure works identified by the Cape Indigenous Mayors Alliance.

"Weather permitting, by the end of next month more than 130km of the Peninsula Developmental Road will be sealed, while 120 direct jobs will be supported throughout the five-year CYRP PDR projects."

Works on the package started in July 2014 and are slated for completion in mid-2019.
