The governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador have agreed to jointly invest to perform major upgrades to Route 510 on the Trans-Labrador Highway.

For this project, the two governments have announced approximately C$15.3m ($12.2m) in joint funding.

The federal government will provide more than C$7.1m ($5.6m) through the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component-National and Regional Projects (PTIC-NRP).

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will contribute more than C$8.1m ($6.4m) for the upgrade.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Dwight Ball said: "The Trans-Labrador Highway is an integral part of Labrador's transportation network. It links communities and provides new economic opportunities.

"By improving the primary transportation infrastructure in Labrador Straits, we will ensure that both people and products can move quickly and safely."

“My government is committed to the completion of the Trans-Labrador Highway so that residents and visitors can travel across Labrador and explore all the opportunities that exist in the 'Big Land'."

The upgrade works include repaving from the Quebec border to Pinware, guide-rail replacement, and culvert and ditch excavation.

Upon completion, the project is expected to improve road safety, as well as enhance the road life by a decade, and contribute to the long-term growth of surrounding communities.

Route 510 upgrade project is one of seven roadway components identified for improvement as part of the Road Rehabilitation and Resurfacing Project worth C$33m ($26.3m) for Newfoundland and Labrador.

Member of Parliament for Labrador Yvonne Jones said: "Important projects like the rehabilitation of Route 510 on the Trans-Labrador Highway connect people, create good-paying, middle-class jobs, and contribute to local economic development.

"By improving the primary transportation infrastructure in Labrador Straits, we will ensure that both people and products can move quickly and safely."
