Trade and transit tools to support global roadmap for sustainable mobility
TINNews |

IRU President Christian Labrot puts forward IRU’s trade and transit tools as tangible ways to achieve sustainable mobility at a high-level panel event at the UN’s annual climate change conference, COP 23, held this year in Bonn, Germany, and hosted by the island nation of Fiji.

He is joined by leading actors in transport, including Young Tae Kim, Secretary General of the International Transport Forum, Jean Todt, President, Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, and moderator, Laura Tuck, from the World Bank, to analyse the findings of the recently released Global Mobility Report, which examines for the first time, how transport can drive sustainability targets.

With global mobility a key factor in realising the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, IRU has been actively involved in the drafting of the report, which includes vital contributions made to chapters on efficiency and universal access.

Highlighting the relationship between cross-border connectivity and economic prosperity, IRU has put the spotlight on trade and transport facilitation through the implementation of tried and tested UN Conventions.

The next steps for a follow-up report, which will focus on transport performance measurements, will include efforts to incorporate tangible services and tools, such as TIR and e-CMR, as sustainability implementation indicators.

Organised by the World Bank and UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the session on Sustainable Mobility in a Changing Climate will feed into the global roadmap of actions to achieving sustainable mobility. Currently in preparation by the UN’s Sustainability for All (SuM4All) initiative, the roadmap pushes the green mobility goal while simultaneously promoting the pillars of universal access, efficiency and safety.
