Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) reported continuing passenger growth, especially on service to China, as it handled 10% more overall passengers year-over-year in the third quarter.

The airport processed 16.8 million passengers in the three months ended Sept. 30, which marked 97.4% of pre-pandemic 2019 third-quarter traffic. “Passenger traffic between China and Singapore continued to post strong growth, recording a 50% year-on-year increase for the quarter, placing China as Changi’s top source market,” SIN said in a statement. “Shanghai witnessed the strongest growth for the second consecutive quarter, with year-to-date traffic more than doubled compared to a year ago.”

SIN said markets seeing 10% or more year-over-year passenger growth in the third quarter included Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, London, Melbourne and Tokyo.

“North Asia continued to be the top performer this quarter, building on the strong momentum we have seen over the past year,” said Lim Ching Kiat, SIN executive vice president for air hub and cargo development. “Markets like China, Hong Kong and Japan have shown good growth for both outbound and inbound travel.”

SIN noted two new route launches are upcoming. From Nov. 9, AirAsia Cambodia will start daily flights to Siem Reap, Cambodia. From Dec. 5, Peach Aviation will open daily service to Osaka, Japan.

SIN reported 512,000 metric tons of cargo throughput in the third quarter, up 13.5% year-over-year. “Growth was seen across all cargo flows,” the airport said. “Exports, imports and transshipments contributed … major improvements in cargo flows between Singapore and China, as well as the U.S.”

SIN’s top five cargo markets in the third quarter included Australia, China, Hong Kong, India and the U.S.
