TRANSPORT for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has awarded a consortium of Bombardier UK and Kiepe Electric a £72m contract to supply 27 additional M5000 high-floor LRVs to boost capacity on the city’s Metrolink light rail network.
The vehicles, which will be based on Bombardier’s Flexity Swift design, are due to be delivered between February 2020 and June 2021.
Metrolink currently operates a fleet of 120 Bombardier M5000 Flexity vehicles, with a minimum of 108 required for service including hot spares.
Additional vehicles will be required for the 5.5km Trafford Park extension, and to enable two-car operation of all services from Piccadilly to Bury and Altrincham.
The trams are being funded through the British government’s Transforming Cities Fund.
