MBTA and CAF Present New Green Line Vehicle Mockup
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has presented a mockup of its future Green Line Type 10 vehicle.
The model was presented at Boston City Hall Plaza on 30 October, allowing the public to experience the new design and provide feedback.
The new Green Line trains are being manufactured under MBTA’s 810-million USD contract with CAF USA Inc. The scope of the contract includes 102 new Green Line vehicles, featuring advanced safety and accessibility enhancements.
“The Green Line Type 10 is going to modernise the Green Line, resulting in service, which is more accessible, more comfortable, and much safer for our customers.”
Key features of the Type 10 vehicles include:
- A 100% low-floor design for easier boarding
- Wider doors for improved access
- Real-time passenger information screens
- CCTV security
- Additional bridgeplate request buttons, intercoms, and a hearing loop
- Four priority areas for wheeled mobility devices
The MBTA and CAF will now continue design finalisation and procurement, with the first pilot cars expected in 2026 and full fleet delivery projected by 2031.
“We are committed to giving our riders the safe, reliable, and comfortable trip that they deserve. The Type 10 mockup vehicle is a peak into the future, allowing the public an opportunity to provide feedback, which is important to us as we finalise design of the vehicle.
“These cars will be state of the art with CCTV security, wider doors, and real time information screens. They are 100% low floor designed, which eliminates the need to traverse steps, making accessing the trolley simpler than ever.”
