Škoda Group has signed a contract to supply seven new trams and eight additional modules for the city of Tampere’s existing tram fleet.

The 70 million EUR contract, which forms part of an option under the city’s original order including a 10-year service package, will see Škoda Group deliver seven optional trams by mid-2027, with the eight additional modules set for installation by July 2028, building on a previous order from Tampereen Raitiotie Oy earlier this year.

Jan Harder, President Region West and North at Škoda Group, said:

“Tampere is setting an example for cities worldwide by investing in sustainable and efficient public transport solutions. We’re proud to deepen our partnership with Tampereen Raitiotie Oy, building on the success of the trams already in service.

“We are committed to supporting their vision with innovative solutions that enhance capacity and maintain compatibility with the existing fleet. This partnership reflects how smart design and collaboration can meet the needs of growing cities.”

Following on from Tampere’s initial contract with Škoda Group in 2017; the company’s latest commitment will see the city receiving seven additional 37-metre, low-floor bi-directional trams, bringing the total supplied by Škoda Group to 35.

With the order of eight additional modules, the city extends the length of its existing units fro 37 to 47 metres, bringing the total number of extended trams in its local fleet to 19 by mid-2028 and boosting passenger capacity by over 30%.

Pekka Sirviö, CEO of Tampere Tramway Ltd., said:

“Ordering longer trams is sensible from the perspective of operational efficiency and passenger service. Longer trams have over 30 percent more passenger capacity than shorter ones, as they can accommodate up to 345 people instead of 264.

“Thanks to the increased passenger capacity, the tram can operate on the entire network with an optimal 7.5-minute interval.”
